Blacksmithing Overview and Forging Hooks – A collaboration between the Folk School and Calypso Farm and Ecology Center

Instructor: Tom Zimmer

This is a four hour forging session combining the Overview course with a Hook forging session.  In this session you will be introduced to the blacksmith shop and the basics of blacksmithing with a gas forge, as well as shop safety, hammering skills and the varied properties of steel. After creating S-hooks (drawing out, twisting and bending) we will learn other blacksmithing fundamentals (squaring, drawing out a taper, rounding, basic scrolling and punching) as we create a variety of J hooks. This will be a good introduction to blacksmithing and it will get you on your way to exploring more project based classes.

(*This Overview is required for anyone who is interested in taking further blacksmithing classes with Calypso.)
