Fish Skin Tanning

In this class you will learn how to skin a fish and clean and prepare the skin for tanning. Several tanning methods will be discussed and a brief historical overview of the use of tanned fishskin will be presented. By the conclusion of the class, students will have their fish skin soaking in a tanning solution.
Students in this class will need to provide a fish for skinning. A whole fish is preferred, but larger fillets can also be used. The skin can come from fresh, frozen, or smoked fish. However, we cannot use the skin of cooked or canned fish. Students should also bring 2 gallon sized ziploc baggies, a few plastic grocery bags, a container or a bag for the skinned fish if they will be bringing it home, several rags or a roll of paper towels, a small knife, a pair of scissors, and a spoon. And plastic gloves, if so desired.
