FolkSkiDerby! – A Spring Break Program for Kids (afternoon session)

Instructor: John Manthei

During this program, each of us will build some sort of imaginative sliding contraption (a sled of sorts) using discarded skis or whatever other materials we can come up with. We will have at our disposal discarded skis, wood, cord, wire, screws, nails and other miscellaneous junk. We encourage each participant to bring additional intriguing materials from home such as old sled parts, slippery things like sled plastic or old plastic sleds, something to make a seat or sled body out of, or even more old skis.

As we make our sleds, we will be exploring ways of fastening things together into a structure that will support two people, remain flexible, and is in some way steerable. This will involve creative problem solving, design, and engineering, as well as the use of a wide variety of tools. Let your imagination and ingenuity run wild!

At the end of the week we will have a grand “FolkSkiDerby” race and find out just how fast they go and which ones actually hold up to the challenge!

Please note: Our Spring Break programs are designed for students to mix and match morning and afternoon sessions. Morning sessions (FolkSkiDerby and Create in Clay) will run from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Afternoon sessions (FolkSkiDerby, Create in Clay, and Turning Cardboard into Motion) will run from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. During the lunch hour, students are welcome to bring a lunch and stay at The Folk School. The lunch hour will be supervised, but there will not be planned activities other than time spent playing outdoors.

Students should bring:

  • lunch if they plan to stay for the lunch hour,
  • snacks to get them through a busy day (if needed),
  • a water bottle, and,
  • warm clothes (as we will be playing outside during the lunch hour).
