Wood Carving Studio (ongoing class)
Instructor: Marianne Stolz
This is an ongoing program in which we explore all aspects of traditional woodcarving from the most elementary to extremely complex.
Projects can range from spoons and bowls to architectural carvings, reliefs, and sculptures. The idea is to try out different tools, woods, and carving techniques and styles and begin to develop proficiency in many of these.
Each project will involve design and planning, carving and finishing. Proficiency in carving tool sharpening is also a goal. We will work mostly with hand tools. Power tools will be used as necessary. We will study the physical properties of wood and begin to intuit how these properties relate to our design and projects.
There are some carving tools available, but depending on student numbers and projects, students will have to provide their own carving tools.
This program is designed around the individual and students can join in at any time. The student and instructor jointly develop a unique curriculum. Projects will be chosen that push the limits of our experience while building confidence. The nature and complexity of these projects will depend on prior experience and personal goals for the course.
