Wool Dyeing Techniques – (4 session series)
A collaboration between the Folk School and Calypso Farm and Ecology Center
Instructor: Susan Willsrud
Learn how to use eco-friendly dyes to create unique multiple color effects, using several different techniques. We will be dyeing wool yarn or roving (students can choose). If you are not already a spinner, you can do the first three classes or you can also arrange for some private spinning classes so that you’ll be ready for the fourth class!
The course will cover the following:
Intro to Acid Dyes and Kettle Dyeing: Become familiar with Acids Dyes and how they work, and Kettle Dyeing, which results in beautiful, colorful, random, variegated fiber.
Intro to Color Work (Using the Color Wheel) and Hand Painting: Learn the basics of using a color wheel as a tool to help decide on a color pallet. Students will also learn how to hand paint yarn or roving.
Creating a “Colorway”: Play with colors and create a personal “colorway” using any of the dyeing techniques used in previous classes.
Spinning in Color: Experiment with different spinning techniques and how the spinning impacts the end result color of the yarn and finished product.
Dates of the Class: Monday & Wednesday evenings, September 4, 6, 11 and 13, 2017
Times of the class: 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm each session
Class Cost: $120 (Calypso member), $180 (non-member). You can become a Calypso member by making a donation of any amount for the year – to support Calypso’s educational programs. As a member, you’ll receive a discount on all of Calypso’s workshops, including blacksmithing, gardening, etc.
