Welcome to The Folk School of Fairbanks

The Folk School is excited to announce “One2Tree”, a partnership between The Folk School and OneTree Alaska, a program of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. In the summer of 2009, both organizations collaborated on the original “OneTree” program; selecting and felling a birch for use by community artists, makers, teachers, and scientists. “One2Tree” seeks to involve community members in drawing inspiration from and utilizing every bit of a birch tree, located on The Folk School’s property. A year of creative pursuits centered around this tree will culminate in a First Friday event at Trax Outdoor Center, on March 2nd, 2018.

The Folk School is looking for participants to be part of “One2Tree” in whatever medium they choose. Come draw, paint, write poetry, compose music, craft a piece from wood or bark, or pose a scientific question about the tree! Please write or call The Folk School to discuss what material you will need from the tree.

Stay tuned for updates about One2Tree events that will be held at The Folk School over the next year:

May 5th, 2017 – a day of making birch syrup from OneTree sap
May 15th, 2017 – a demonstration of how to top the limbs of the OneTree (view photos from this event!)
June 15th, 2017 – a bark harvesting class
