Have you ever dreamed of having a community shop full of hand and power tools where you can pursue your own project or bring your family and work together on a project? The Folk School shares this dream and invites you to become a member of our community.
Open Shop at The Folk School is a time in which individuals may take advantage of a cheery space and supervision to work on his/her own projects. These projects might be related to a class they are taking or have taken with The Folk School, or one of their own design in which they have the skills and knowledge to proceed, but simply need space, tools or companionship for success.
Our shop provides a safe environment with benches, hand tools and power tools in a number of configurations. We have vises, shaving horses, chopping blocks, work tables and an ever growing selection of hand tools. We, also, have specialized tools for working bark and leather, as well as other cool treasures you can rummage around for. Although it is usually best to bring in your own materials, we do have a selection of supplies such as fasteners, adhesives, abrasives, bone, antler, bark, leather, wire, cord and thread which can be purchased.
During Open Shop, The Folk School supervisor will ensure safety through oversight and determining which power tools a student is skilled to use independently. The staff supervisor will, also, be able to help find the tools/materials wanted by students and answer general questions while he/she works on their own projects. As this is open shop time and not class time, the Folk School supervisor is not present to teach new skills or crafts.
We have developed some guidelines for use of the Shop and tools and how it can work for everyone. Click on the link below to view the guidelines:
